    John Wilkes Booth: Birthday

    American stage actor
    Born: May 10, 1838
    Died: April 26, 1865

John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865) was an American stage actor who infamously assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. He was born on May 10, 1838, near Bel Air, Maryland, to a prominent theatrical family. Booth’s father, Junius Brutus Booth, was a well-known British stage actor, and his mother, Mary Ann Holmes, came from a family of notable actors.

Booth developed a passion for acting from an early age and began his professional career on the stage in the 1850s. He gained recognition for his performances and became one of the most popular actors of his time, known for his good looks and charismatic stage presence.

However, Booth harbored strong Confederate sympathies and vehemently opposed the abolition of slavery. As the American Civil War progressed, his beliefs intensified, and he became involved with Confederate secret societies and conspiracies. He supported the Confederacy in various ways, including using his acting tours as opportunities to spread propaganda.

On the evening of April 14, 1865, just days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender, Booth carried out his most infamous act. He sneaked into Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., where President Abraham Lincoln was watching a play. Booth approached Lincoln’s box and shot him in the back of the head at close range.

After the assassination, Booth fled the scene and went into hiding. A massive manhunt was launched, and he was eventually cornered and shot on April 26, 1865, in a tobacco barn in Port Royal, Virginia. Booth died from his injuries a few hours later, at the age of 26.

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln by Booth shocked the nation and had profound implications for the post-Civil War period. Booth’s actions forever marked him as one of the most infamous figures in American history.

    • It’s part of my game, getting to the free-throw line and being aggressive. If you say that I get superstar calls or I get babied by the refs, that’s just taking away from how I play. That’s disrespectful to me.
    • I come from a small county outside of Washington DC called PG County, and me, my mom, my brother, we moved so many different places growing up. And it felt like a box. It felt like there was no getting out.
    • You hear all these stories about, ‘There’s one in a million guys that make it to the NBA and stay there.’ To see people cheering for me and when they say my name, it’s just crazy. It’s still crazy to me.
    • I didn’t fall in love with it just because it was me playing. I fell in love with it because I’ve got guys like this – like these guys every single day that push me to be the best that I can be.
    • My mother taught me to always be strong and always work hard. She’s been working hard her whole life for me and my brother. I’m a lot like her in that I work hard for what I want. She taught me that.
    • I’m going to be real as hell and show you who I am, because I want the kids to see who I really am and the basketball players to see who I really am, and that’s all that matters to me.
