History

Oli 96.8FM is a Tamil radio station especially made for Indian community residing in Singapore. It was on aired in the year 1936 as a participant of British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation. On August 1965, the channel was given a new name Indian Services of Radio Television Singapore (RTS) with frequency 1368 kHz, but on 7 December 1997 the name was changed and kept as Oli 96.8FM. It is known to be the only channel that never uses automation during the early hours. Now the channel is owned and under the management of MediaCorp.

It is infotainment radio station in the Tamil language and playing for the Indian community in Singapore, offering the latest Tamil songs, regional Indian songs, local & international news, lifestyle features, and Indian contemporary and classical hits, 24 hours a day. Energetic and attractive DJ’s are amused your whole day and night. They always keep themselves connected with their listeners in order to create more refined radio services. It is also the only station in Singapore that never uses automation during the early hours. On June 7, 2014, Oli 96.8FM launched their new logo at Bukit Panjang Plaza.

This radio station formerly recognized as Perfect Ten 98.7 FM before July 2005. 987’s studio moved out of Caldecott Broadcast Centre on 19 July 2010 and it broadcast from “SCAPE” along Orchard Road at 2 Orchard Link for 3 years. 987 moved back to Caldecott Broadcast Centre on 20 May 2013 after its tenancy with “SCAPE” expired. 987 moved again to the brand new Mediacorp Campus, Mediapolis, on 17 January 2017.

This radio station is operated by Mediacorp. It is at present Singapore’s #1 Malay Radio Station according to the latest Nielsen Radio Survey as of 1 December 2016. The station’s DJs include Suharti Ali and Zakiah Halim, who has more than 30 years of experience in the radio industry.

History

It was first aired operating out of Singapore with the independence of Malaya on 31 August 1957. The first air date was 1959 as Radio Singapore; 1994 as Radio Corporation of Singapore. Former frequencies 675 kHz. The branding stuck even as the network the station was in changed names several times until 23 November 1991 where the station gained its current name as Warna (Malay: “Colour”).

Every 5:00 am, an automated programming service is used for 90 minutes of religious programming. For five times a day, the prayer call or azan is played on the station at the assigned time calculated and deliberated by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore; the practice differs from Ria where it only announces prayer times.

Khutbah Broadcasts

On Fridays at around 6:30 pm, a recording of the Solat Jumaat service is broadcast to recap the sermon of the Imam during the period.

Special Programming

During the Maulid al-Nabi holiday, the station airs Nasheed music dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad. It also replaces regular music playlists throughout the day.
