    Steven Soderbergh: Birthday

    American film director
    Born: January 14, 1963

Steven Andrew Soderbergh was born on January 14, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the second of six children of Mary Ann (née Bernard) and Peter Soderbergh. His father was of Swedish and Irish descent, and his mother was of Italian ancestry. While he was still at a very young age, his family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his father was a professor and the dean of the College of Education at Louisiana State University. While still in high school, around the age of 15, Soderbergh enrolled in the university’s film animation class and began making short 16-millimeter films with secondhand equipment, one of which was the short film “Janitor.” After graduating high school, he went to Hollywood, where he worked as a freelance editor. His time there was brief, and shortly after, he returned home and continued making short films and writing scripts.

    Dave Grohl: Birthday

    American musician
    Born: January 14, 1969

Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, will always be remembered as the drummer for Nirvana. But, drumming for a great band such as Nirvana is not Dave’s only claim in the world of music. Dave’s musical career began at age 15 as the guitarist and later as the drummer for a punk band called “Freak Baby.” A year later, he was behind the drums for “Mission Impossible” and later that summer drumming for “Dain Bramage”. Another year down the road, an opportunity to drum with one of his favorite punk bands, “Scream,” was just too great to pass up. This leads us to 1990, when “Scream” seemed to be coming to an end and “Nirvana” was in need of a drummer. While recording and touring with “Nirvana,” Dave continued to write lyrics and music that he would record during breaks with the band. After the tragic end of “Nirvana,” Dave eventually turned to his music to create Foo Fighters. While playing guitar and singing with Foo Fighters is his main job, you can also find Dave channeling his musical genius throughout the world of rock. Dave has drummed for Queens of the Stone Age and Killing Joke. He has also recorded and guest performed with his buddies Tenacious D. All the while recording for his own hardcore project, “Probot”.

    • I think that if you’re passionate about something and you’re driven and you’re focused, then you can pretty much do anything that you want to do in life.
    • In this day and age, when you can use a machine or computer to simulate or emulate what people can do together, it still can’t replace the magic of four people in a room playing.

  • Holland Taylor: Birthday

    Holland Taylor: Birthday

    American actress
    Born: January 14, 1943

Holland Taylor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the third-born (and last) daughter of her mother, Virginia Davis, a painter, and the only child of her father, C. Tracy Taylor, an attorney. She spent her teen years in nearby Allentown, PA, where Holland got the nickname “Penny Taylor” because of her coppery hair color. Holland attended Quaker schools and then majored in drama at Bennington College. At the age of 22, Holland moved to New York with the desire to become a “great big Broadway star.” After fifteen years of “disappointments and near misses” in New York and California, Holland was cast as Ruth Dunbar in the 1980 sitcom Bosom Buddies with Tom Hanks. It was Holland’s “breakout” role, and it led to many other TV and film offers, including the movie Romancing the Stone (1984), in which Holland played Kathleen Turner’s book publisher and friend. Holland had hesitated to accept the role, but her acting coach and mentor, Stella Adler, encouraged her not to be so “stage-minded.” In 1992, Holland was still living in Greenwich Village, New York, and traveling back and forth between a rented apartment in Hollywood and New York in order to work on both coasts. Holland has said her first love was the theater, but the work for her in TV and film was better. However, by 1992, Holland said she was dealing with traveling back and forth “less and less well.” Over the next few years, Holland moved to California full-time. In the last couple of years, she gave up her apartment in West Hollywood for her own home in the Hollywood Hills. Holland won an Emmy in 1999 for her work in “The Practice” (1997).
